There exist contrasting views regarding getting old. While some believe old-age is too vulnerable these days, others feel it is just the opposite. It is difficult to reach a rational conclusion without discussing both arguments in detail.

When assessing the reason behind the first viewpoint, it is a fact that the aged are not getting that much dignity in the society when compared to the past. When in the past, they used to be the centre of the family, today; they are secluded in their own rooms or in old-age homes. Instead of respecting the aged population, people are seen exploiting them financially and neglecting their needs and desires. Often the old age people are abused both mentally and physically. On a whole, the atmosphere today appears to be very hostile to the aged ones.

However, others object this pointing at the better facilities they are getting today, when compared to the past. To be clearer, they would say that the aged have wider opportunities to explore themselves today, both by engaging in physical activities and being a part of a broad social network. For example, they can enjoy facilities like music therapy, arts and cultural entertainments as they have a lot of free-time. They can communicate with any age group now with the help of social media, and share their thoughts and ideas on those platforms. Lastly, they project the advanced medical facilities, which can make them feel better and extend their life.

After analysing both the views in detail, it is clear that today’s generation rarely appreciate the presence and potentials of the aged population. Provided that they change this attitude, and the old age population adopts the newer facilities offered to them whole-heartedly, I think we can transform the existing situation to the best-suited for the elderly population.
