REAL IELTS QUESTION: 25 SEPTEMBER, 2021

It is often debated whether contentment of a person depends on his financial status or on any other factors. In this modern world, both views seem to be relevant in varying proportions, and a thorough discussion is needed before framing a rational conclusion.

According to the first view, money is placed above all in making a person happy. To be precise, whether it is a need or a luxury which determines a person’s happiness level, it can be bought when he is economically strong. For instance, education, health, transport and even dignity can be accessed when a person is rich. The feeling of pride and power is naturally seen among the affluent, which makes them feel dominant in the society. By contrast, in case of a person who has a deficit annual budget, he will definitely face some challenges in satisfying his personal or familial needs.

The opposing group feels that there are some other factors other than money which make a person happy. For some, it is the personal relationships, including relationships with family and friends. The feeling of belonging, love and care in these relations add colours to a person’s life. Engaging in their favourite activities makes some others happy. While, some enjoy their work and get involved in that, some read books and some travel to distant places. It is interesting to note that being young and living longer can also make some people happy.

After analysing both views in detail, I think happiness is hard to define and it is perceived differently by different people. It is money for some, while for some; it depends on a variety of factors.
