A controversy exists whether a student who enrolls in a university should be given privilege to choose his major or to allot him job-oriented courses only. I believe it is irrational to impose a restriction on students whatever the circumstances may be.

On the one side of the argument, some believe it is essential to mould a productive workforce right out of the universities, and this is possible only if the students choose majors which are demanded by the job industry. To be precise, in the field of science and technology, more skilled and competent professionals are on demand, and they are usually expected from top universities. On top of this, a student who opt such subjects can establish himself in the job-market easily and is expected to get a higher remuneration.

On the contrary, others feel that a compulsory selection of subjects at colleges is unjustifiable as it hinders the personal interest of a student. To be clearer, most students have their dreams when they opt for their university studies. For example, some prefer to be an artist, while others like to become businessmen. In case of any restriction, the society would lack the equilibrium in future. For instance, there are countries which have abundant workforce in medicine and engineering, but have to hire workers from other countries for their smooth functioning.

In my opinion, every student should have the freedom to choose his major at the university. This would help students to excel in their respective fields. If a restriction is placed, unfriendly and unsatisfactory work environments are created.

In conclusion, when students are restricted to choose only subjects which are beneficial for the future, it would benefit both the employers and students. However, it is better not to hinder the interests of the students and to create an unstable workforce.
