The extent of merits of both co-education and single-sex school education is often a matter of dispute. While some think that education in mixed schools is more advantageous, others think the opposite. Both arguments have their own gravity, and hence a thorough discussion is needed before framing a logical conclusion.

On the one hand, those who support mixed schools focus on the key advantage of such schools over any other system: the better understanding of co-operation among the students. Students at such schools can perceive the qualities of their fellow students, irrespective of their gender, in a positive way, and take part in group activities in an excellent manner. These students are very often seen encouraging and motivating each other without any gender discrimination. They also share their ideas to the opposite gender in a much respectful way and work towards a common goal. This can be visible in group activities such as role plays.

On the other hand, those who argue for separate schools for boys and girls highlight the better academic performance that students achieve than in mixed schools. They assume that this is due to amount of concentration they have at studies. They claim that this happens in extra-curricular activities too, when the students can exhibit their full-potentials, without having concerns of uneasy circumstances such as bullying from the opposite gender. They also highlight the testimonials of many well-performing school teachers, who feel very comfortable in supervising students from the same sex.

After analyzing both the views in detail, I think both cooperation and academic performance are essential characteristics a school student should have. Therefore, it is hard to state which system is better. However, I believe both should co-exist.
