Classification of students according to their academic abilities is a matter of controversy. While some believe it is needed, others feel that a class should be diverse. Although the segregation of students produces some visible positive outcomes, I tend to align to the second view.

On the one hand, the former group thinks when students are classified based on their academic abilities, the most significant advantage it provides is the better results. To be clearer, it would be convenient for the teachers to deliver the classes to a group of students who have the same wavelength. Students, on the other hand, would be able to absorb the class more effectively, without much distraction and can enhance their overall performance. A strong sense of competition is a classical feature here. Even though it is a negative personal intention, ultimately, this too would help the students to perform in an exceptional way.

On the other hand, the opposing group points out that segregating students based on their academic performance would evoke negative influence among majority of students. To be precise, when such a classification takes place, a sense of inferiority complex is created in the minds most students, who do not fall in the best performing group. This would make the situation worse, as these students tend to show least interest in studies. There are incidents of drop-outs and delinquencies reported from many parts of the world, owing to this discrimination. The society is diverse, and school students should be grown up in a similar situation for their better future, they add.

After analyzing both views, though selecting students on the basis of their performance fetches positive results, especially in case of the overall performance, I think it is impractical as it has some serious drawbacks for students and the society.
