It is argued that so called ‘fat tax’, a tax hike on unhealthy foods should be imposed by the respective governments in order to motivate their citizens to adopt a healthy eating habit. I not only agree to this, but also argue for proactive steps to stop the availability of foods that make adverse effects on human health.

Firstly, the higher tax would affect the behaviour of the people who generally prefer a fast food or convenient food culture. To be precise, this type of tax will directly affect the price of such foods and this would refrain some people from consuming such food products. For example, South Africa and Portugal had imposed taxes on sugary foods, which is now showing positive health outcomes.

Secondly, this would help people to switch on to traditional or organic food culture. To be clearer, as the price of such foods leap, people would stick on to locally produced food items. Studies have shown that when prices went high for convenient foods, more folks got aware of having a balanced diet, which would prevent them from embracing life-style diseases like diabetes and obesity. This not only improves their health, but also boosts the local economy.

I, however would suggest governments to go an extra mile, by totally abolishing unhealthy foods. A recent study revealed that after tobacco, unhealthy diets are the second leading cause for morbidity and mortality in the UK.

In conclusion, there is no doubt in aligning with the appeal for imposing an extra tax on unhealthy foods, which would definitely fetch positive results.
