 It is argued that the predominant reason why people listen to music is to relax. I cannot agree to the view wholeheartedly, as this is determined by individual preferences and changing situations.

 The key reason behind my hesitation to align to the view is because of the fact that music is enjoyed by different people in different ways. To be precise, when age determines the purpose of listening to music for some, for others, personality determines it. When some people prefer slow music, others love to enjoy hip hop music. Some prefer music to elevate their mood, while others listen music to keep themselves occupied. In fact, people have diverse tastes and attitudes towards music.

 Another factor which determines the main function of music is the circumstances. To be clearer, the same individual prefers to listen to music for different purposes, depending on the changing situations. For example, the music a person wants at a night party would be different from the music he hears to keep him engaged at leisure. Music is also used in treating the ill and depressed.

 I admit that a considerable proportion of people listen to music to relieve stress, relax and rejuvenate their mind and body. However, it does not mean that it is the most important function of music.

 To conclude, though a sizeable proportion of people use music as a tool to relax, one cannot say that it is the most crucial function of music. Music, primarily as a form of entertainment, becomes significant based on the attitudes of people and the changing circumstances.
