The best way to solve environmental problems is to increase the price of fuel. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and provide relevant examples if any,  from your own knowledge and experience. Write at least 250 words.

It is suggested that the most effective way to solve the environmental problems is the hike in the price of fuel. Although, the move seems to be logical in one way, I do not think it can make a significant impact in fighting environmental issues.

The cardinal reason why I hesitate to align with the suggestion is because of the fact that fuel falls in the category of essential commodities. To be precise, the demand of essential commodities is not expected to fall even if its price is hiked. For example, in many countries where food is imported, it is quiet natural that people still continue to buy it even at a higher price. The situation is the same in case of fuel, as it is one of the integral parts of human life.

The second reason why I cannot agree to the view is because of the existence of other better alternatives to tackle environmental issues. One such alternative is the wise use of resources. This is very true in case of perishable resources like fossil fuels. It not only saves energy for the future, but also reduces the global air pollution in a great manner. Another alternative is to discourage today’s ‘use and throw’ culture, and promote the reuse and recycling of non-biodegradable products.

I admit that a hike in the fuel price can reduce the use of fuels. However, unless and until a cheaper and sustainable source of renewable energy is introduced, it cannot make a significant impact in tackling environmental issues.

To conclude, though some positive impacts can be expected by an increased fuel price, I can definitely say this is not the best way in dealing with environmental crises.
