MODEL ANSWER:

The process of generating electricity in a hydroelectric dam is illustrated in the given diagram.

As can be seen in the diagram, the flow of river water is checked in a reservoir. When water reaches a desired level, the dam is ready to function. When the demand of electricity arises, water is screened into the intake, and when the intake is full, the water inside is released out through the narrow pen-stock located at its bottom. The water gushes through it and falls on the turbine, which is placed far below.

As the water falls forcefully into the turbine, it rotates swiftly, converting the mechanical energy to electrical energy. The power generated in the generators, is stored in the power house. As per the requirement, the power is supplied to the respective places of demand via long distance power lines. The water which passes past the turbine after the electricity generation is flown into the river.

Overall, it is clear that the power generation in a hydroelectric plant is systematic, but depends on the availability of water.
