You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to generate electricity. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

The given diagram illustrates the stages of generating electricity from geothermal source. The process begins with the pumping down of cold water and ends up with the distribution of electricity.

Overall, the production of electricity using the geothermal energy is unique and involves several distinct stages.

Firstly, the cold water which is collected in a tank is channeled down through the injection well, which is 4.5 km deep. Under the earth’s surface, the water gets heated in the geothermal zone, where the heat is transferred from hot rocks. In the subsequent step, the hot water is pumped up through the production well, which also has the same depth of the injection well, but slightly wider.

When this hot water reaches the condenser above the ground, it transforms itself to steam. This steam is allowed to escape through a narrow tube to mount its pressure. The turbine is rotated swiftly by this steam and here, the mechanical energy is transformed to electrical energy. The electricity thus generated is transferred into the distribution networks.
