The first tunnel was constructed between 1986 and 1998, which stretches 2.2 kilometres under a bridge across a river. The tunnel has a height of 1.5 metres and has a sharp downward bend as it passes under the river bed. The overall cost of the tunnel, which is constructed between the river sand was $555 million.
The second tunnel was constructed in a shorter span of time, and this was between the years 2002 and 2006. The 2.5 meter tunnel is made through a strong layer of stone and clay which stretches 3.6 kilometres. The tunnel passes underneath a busy urban dual carriage way. The total cost of this three lane tunnel was $1.1 billion at the time of completion.
