Whoever controls the media also controls the opinions and attitudes of the people and there is little that can be done to rectify this. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is obvious that media has an incredible role in the life of humans at present. Even though there are attempts by the persons on top of the media to influence the attitudes and opinions of the people, I do not think it is mostly successful.

To commence with, many influential elements are trying to influence the media for selfish factors. This is commonly seen in the print media, the entertainment media and in the most popular one today: the social media. One can see a step ahead these days as many of these social elements, whether it is a political party or a business man is transforming themselves to the directors of any of these media. For example, a political party owns a newspaper or a TV channel to instill its ideology to the public. Likewise, many business tycoons have no hesitation to make a movie to promote a habit in favor of their business.

However, people, who are generally rational, are not seen entirely controlled by these external influences. Today’s generation has a genuine potential to distinguish between good and bad. This can be better proven when huge business entities advertise their products on their own popular media, and they see the business is not booming just because of it. Similarly, for years many political parties own newspapers, and they find it hard even to win a province completely.

I admit that some sort of brainwashing is done when these media owners combine and propagate a specific agenda for the aforementioned elements. The increasing popularity of certain fast-foods is a quintessential example for this. Yet, I believe it can hardly influence a much larger population.

To conclude, albeit media owners can influence the interests and attitudes of some sectors of the society, I do not think that it has a significant impact on a higher number of people.
