You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

Your landlord has increased the amount of rent you pay every month and you don’t find it appropriate. Write a letter to the landlord. In your letter:

  • Explain why you are writing.
  • Describe why you find the increase inappropriate.
  • What you want to do now

Write at least 150 words.

Dear Mrs Mc Convey,

I am writing to express my concern regarding the hike in the monthly rent which you have informed me recently.

As per the rental agreement which was signed between us, I have been paying £600 on 30th of every month since last October.  I have never made a delay in the payment and you were fully co-operative all through my stay. However, you wrote to me that there would be a hike in the rent by £150 from this month, which would be a financial concern for me.

You are aware that I am the only earning member of my family. My son is in college and my wife is still searching for a permanent job. You are also aware that there was an increase in the electricity and gas bills recently. With my monthly salary of £1800, I am merely able to manage my family budget. Therefore, I feel your decision is a bit disappointing for me.

As I informed you earlier, our company is considering hiking the salary of its employees by 5% by this April. I would be happy enough to pay the revised rent from this May, if it happens. It would be appreciated if you could delay the hike till then.

I look forward to hearing from you a most favourable reply.

Yours sincerely,

Sarah Macdonald
